hangul syllable byeon

Hangul Syllable Byeon

4289/11172

변, pronounced byeon, is a Korean Hangul syllable, not a standalone English word or emoji. In 변하다 it helps mean “change,” while in 한강 변 it means an edge or riverside. Read the whole word, not the block alone.

Text symbol

What 변 means

It has no single translation by itself. The same Korean sound byeon can stand for different roots borrowed from Chinese characters, so isolated 변 is a fragment. In 변하다 it belongs to “to change”; after a river name such as 한강 변 it marks an edge or riverside.

Why is Hangul built in blocks?

Hangul was invented for accessible Korean writing. The system was recorded in 1443 and explained in 1446; earlier Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters for Korean. Chinese characters dominated official writing until 1894, and after 1910 preserving Hangul also carried national-identity weight. Each square block joins beginning, vowel, and ending letters, and fonts can place those parts differently.
