What 첼 means
One syllable, with its meaning supplied by the word around it. 첼 combines the Korean letters ㅊ, ㅔ, and ㄹ; by itself, it is not a usual complete word.
The Korean word 첼로 comes from Italian violoncello, the name for the cello; 첼리스트 means a person who plays it. Hangul was created in 1443, and a 1446 guide called Hunminjeongeum explained how to use the script. Earlier Korean writing also adapted Chinese characters through systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal.
The same syllable can appear as separate jamo, ㅊㅔㄹ. Its display changes, not its reading.

1Why does 첼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
