What 춥 means
춥 is the cold stem of the Korean adjective 춥다.
Alone, it is normally not a complete modern Korean word.
The earlier form 칩다 had the same cold sense in Worin seokbo, a Korean text from 1459. Hangul writes speech in syllable blocks; 춥 is one block in 춥다.
Why does 춥 become 추워요?
Final ㅂ changes before vowel-starting endings.
It becomes 우, which combines with 어 in 추워요. Before consonant-starting endings, ㅂ stays: 춥고, 춥지만.
The block has initial ㅊ, vowel ㅜ, and final ㅂ. Text can split and recombine it without changing the syllable.
Questions people ask
1Why does 춥 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
