What 쵸 means

Switch to Korean input; enter ㅊ, then ㅛ.

On the standard two-set Korean keyboard layout, Dubeolsik, C enters ㅊ and Y enters ㅛ. In Latin mode those keys produce separate c and y. Fonts can change the components' placement and size without changing the text character.

Where does 쵸 appear in older Korean?

It appears inside historical words rather than carrying one meaning on its own.

The old Korean spelling 쵸 appears in Middle Korean, an earlier form of Korean: 고쵸 was a word for pepper. Another word history runs ᄇᆡᄎᆡ ᄇᆡ쵸 배초 배추, tracing the Korean word for cabbage. These examples show changes within words, not a standalone meaning for 쵸.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, was designed to make Korean easier to write than using Chinese characters. Its letters combine consonants and vowels into syllable blocks. Hangul's earliest record is dated 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446.

When should I write 쵸 or 초?

For a modern standard Korean loanword, use 초.

In modern standard loanword spelling, 초콜릿 is standard and 쵸콜릿 is not. Modern standard Korean pronounces 쵸 and 초 alike.

Yukjin is a Korean dialect. A reference records older speakers retaining ㅛ after ㅊ, including 쵸 alongside the Chinese character 燭. That regional pattern can explain 쵸 in a dialect source; it is not the general modern spelling.

Marked in modern standard Korean: historical, dialectal, quoted, or nonstandard.

Use 초 for a standard modern loanword; retain 쵸 in an older quotation or documented dialect form.

Why does 쵸 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
