hangul syllable dad

Hangul Syllable Dad

On its own, 닫 usually needs surrounding Korean; it is the Hangul block used in 닫다, “to close” or “to shut.” In words, the stem covers doors, businesses, and a shut mouth. It is ㄷ + ㅏ + final ㄷ.

What 닫 means

Treat 닫 as a verb stem, not as a standalone message.

The National Institute's dictionary uses 닫다 for closing doors, lids, drawers, or windows; finishing business; shutting down a company; and closing your mouth. 닫히다 describes something becoming closed, while 열다 is its listed antonym.

The block's job is orthographic: Hangul uses it for one syllable inside a larger form. The dictionary lists 닫아, 닫으니, and 닫는 as forms of 닫다, so endings supply the grammatical reading.

Worth knowing

  • The related passive appears as Middle Korean 다티다 in the Worin seokbo (1459), an older form in this verb family.

Questions people ask

Why does 닫 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
