hangul syllable dae

Hangul Syllable Dae

1793/11172

대 is a Korean syllable, written dae in Latin letters. Its meaning depends on context: size, generation, era, matchup, ratio or a vehicle count.

What 대 means

“Big” is only one possibility. Hanja—Chinese characters used in Korean—explain different roots: 大 for size, 代 for generations or eras, 對 for matchups or ratios, 臺 for counting vehicles. They are not its letter components.

Hangul was invented in 1443 to make Korean easier to write, officially introduced in 1446, and used in royal literature and Buddhist translations by 1447.

Ordinary Korean text, not an emoji reaction.

Do not automatically translate an isolated 대 as “big.”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 대 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
