당 has no fixed meaning alone. The full Korean word shows whether it concerns sugar, a political party, or something else.

Text symbol

What 당 means

Its meaning comes from the word around it. Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean vocabulary) distinguish meanings: 糖 relates to sugar; 黨 means political party. Neither is the visual source of the Hangul block.

Hangul was created in 1443 to widen access to Korean writing. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum book explained the script. Earlier methods—Idu, gugyeol, and hyangchal—used Chinese characters to write Korean.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 당 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
