What 땍 means
It supplies one syllable’s sound inside a word.
The word carries the meaning. Its block joins initial consonant ㄸ, vowel ㅐ, and final consonant ㄱ; Unicode can also store those parts separately.
Why was Hangul created?
It gave Korean a writing system of its own.
King Sejong created Hangul in 1443, first called Hunminjeongeum. Earlier, Koreans used Chinese characters and difficult adaptations of them to write Korean. A book of the same name, published in 1446, explained the new letters. Hangul became official for public documents in 1894, then lost national-script status under Japanese rule in 1910.

1Why does 땍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
