hangul syllable ddat

Hangul syllable Ddat

땉 is a Korean syllable block in Hangul, the Korean alphabet: opening consonant ㄸ, vowel ㅏ, final consonant ㅌ. By itself it identifies one syllable; surrounding Korean text tells you the full word. On a standard two-set Korean keyboard, enter Shift+E, K, X.

What 땉 means

땉 gives you one Korean syllable, not the word around it.

The meaning of 땉 depends on the Korean word it belongs to. Its parts are Hangul letters, called jamo: ㄸ is the starting consonant, ㅏ the vowel, and ㅌ the ending consonant.

Hangeul was designed to write Korean speech more directly than the earlier reliance on Classical Chinese writing. The earliest official record cited for Hangeul is an entry in the Sejong Sillok, a royal chronicle, in 1443; the book Hunminjeongeum appeared in 1446 and explains the script's purpose and syllable design. Hangeul became official for public documents in 1894. It later spread through print and entered modern design debates.

What does it mean when someone sends 땉?

A message containing only 땉 gives you one syllable to interpret.

Look for the Korean word around it. If the block arrived alone, ask what word or phrase it belongs to; the syllable itself cannot identify the sender's full wording or tone.

How do I type 땉?

Use a Korean input method and enter ㄸ, ㅏ, then ㅌ.

On the standard Dubeolsik two-set QWERTY layout, press Shift+E, K, X in that order. A Korean input method editor (IME) assembles the letters into one block; if another syllable appears, check that ㄸ is the tense starting consonant and ㅌ is the final.

Neutral as Hangul text; its tone comes from the surrounding Korean words, not from the block alone.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 땉 look different in fonts?

It can. The same syllable can be stored as this precomposed block or as an equivalent sequence of jamo, and Hangul fonts can vary the components' shape, size, and placement.

Why doesn't ddat produce 땉?

No. On a standard Dubeolsik layout, ddat types Latin letters; it is not the Korean key sequence used to compose 땉.
