What 뗒 means

With Korean 2-set active, press ShiftE, then p, then w.

Korean’s common 2-set keyboard layout, called Dubeolsik, uses those keys for the block’s initial, vowel, and final jamo. On a phone, add Korean and select the 2-set/QWERTY layout; if Latin letters appear, switch the input language to Korean.

What does 뗒 mean by itself?

The surrounding Korean word supplies its meaning.

As of 2026-09-13, this exact block has no established standalone word or chat reading. Its positional jamo—the Hangul letters that join into syllable blocks—are ᄄ, ᅦ, and ᆽ: initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant.

Hangul’s original name was Hunminjeongeum, “Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People.” King Sejong created it in 1443 so Korean speech could be written more directly and learned more easily; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained its purpose and design. Before Hangul, Korean was written with Chinese characters, known as Hanja, and adapted methods such as Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol used them to record Korean speech. Hangul became Korea’s official national writing system in 1894; the name Hangeul spread widely in 1928.

Why does 뗒 look different in fonts?

Different drawings can still represent the same syllable.

Unicode supports a precomposed syllable block and an equivalent sequence of positional jamo; text normalization can convert between them. Fonts may draw the block differently, and an unsupported font may show a missing-glyph box. Text layout keeps a Hangul syllable together instead of breaking its jamo across lines.

1

Why does 뗒 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
