Hangul syllable Ddon

2581/11172

똔 is a Korean syllable, not a complete word with a fixed meaning; its reading depends on the Korean word around it. A Korean IME builds it from tense ㄸ, vowel ㅗ, and final ㄴ. In some Korean words, 돈 is written with plain ㄷ even when its sound resembles 똔.

What 똔 means

On its own, 똔 is a syllable, not a complete word meaning. It combines tense ㄸ, vowel ㅗ, and final ㄴ. Its meaning comes from the Korean word it belongs to; an isolated block does not tell you which word is intended.

Hangul was designed for Korean speakers who had relied on difficult Chinese-character adaptations to write Korean. Its first recorded evidence is dated 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum, meaning “Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People,” appeared in 1446. Its syllable blocks were meant to make Korean writing easier to learn. From a court-announced writing project, Hangul also entered Buddhist, Confucian, medical, farming, practical, literary, and everyday writing. Earlier practices called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to Korean; they are predecessors in use, not visual ancestors of 똔.

how to type 똔

Enter ㄸ, ㅗ, then ㄴ in a Korean IME. It composes those parts into 똔. Switch from English mode to Korean input if needed.

Some systems can output the jamo separately. Apps and fonts differ in whether they join those pieces into the expected syllable; the precomposed block is supported more consistently.

Verdict: 똔 and 돈 are spelled differently

In spelling, 똔 and 돈 are different. The Korean word 돈 means “money.” In words such as 목돈 and 거스름돈, dictionaries keep 돈 in the spelling even though its spoken initial consonant is tense, like ㄸ in 똔. Hearing that sound alone does not change the established spelling.

Neutral as Korean text; on its own, it does not identify which word is intended.

Do not replace a word’s established 돈 spelling just because its initial sound resembles 똔.
