Hangul syllable ddwe

2773/11172

뛔 is a Hangul syllable, not a standalone word with its own meaning. In Korean pronunciation notation, it appears in readings of 못되다 (“bad” or “unkind”); the Korean Basic Dictionary also lists 뙤 as a pronunciation variant. Dubeolsik builds it from a tense consonant and a compound vowel.

What 뛔 means

It is a Korean syllable, not a word with its own meaning.

Its sound is roughly “ttwe”: start with a tight t, without a strong puff of air, then glide from u toward e. The Korean Basic Dictionary lists [몯ː뛔다] and [몯ː뙤다] as pronunciation forms for 못되다, which means “bad” or “unkind.” The word carries that meaning; 뛔 does not.

How is 뛔 built, and where did Hangul begin?

It is a syllable block made by combining Hangul letters.

뛔 joins the tense initial ㄸ to the compound vowel ㅞ, following Hangul's regular block design. Korean ruler King Sejong created Hangul in 1443 to make Korean writing more direct; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained the new script's principles. Earlier, Korean was also written using Chinese-character systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, which adapted those characters to Korean.

Hangul later appeared in religious, educational, practical, and public writing. Scholars have compared its design with the separate Phags-pa script and Chinese tables that classify speech sounds. Those are parallels in writing-system design, not evidence that 뛔 was borrowed.

How do I type 뛔?

On the standard Korean two-set layout, press ShiftE, then n, p.

ShiftE enters ㄸ; n then p enter ㅞ. Type the consonant first and the vowel next; the Korean input method combines them into 뛔.

A decomposed Hangul sequence writes 뛔 as two separate letter characters; the precomposed block 뛔 is one character. Both represent the same syllable, but software can preserve or display them differently.

Neutral as a Hangul syllable; the word around it supplies the meaning.

“Bad” is the meaning of 못되다, not 뛔 by itself.

Why does 뛔 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
