What 뜀 means
It contributes “jumping” or “running” inside a Korean word.
뜀 is the verbal-noun form associated with 뛰다, a verb covering running, jumping, and leaping. A bare 뜀 has no single English translation: the surrounding word settles it. In 뜀틀, it belongs to the vaulting apparatus; in 뜀박질, it belongs to a word for running.
This block has no separate pictorial origin. Hangul was designed as a practical alphabet for writing Korean, and its explanation was published in 1446. The related verb appears in a 1461 Middle Korean attestation as ᄠᅱ다. The encoding record dates the computer character, not the word.
Why does 뜀 change meaning by word?
The following word tells you which motion is meant.
뛰다 carries both run and jump senses. A 2024 Korean language column describes 뜀박질 as an extension toward 달리다, or “run,” while 뜀틀 stays tied to jumping over an apparatus.
The regional split is concrete: a 2017 RFA recollection uses 뜀줄 for a childhood rope game where South Korean usage prefers 줄넘기. One dictionary derives 뜀줄 from 뛰다 > 뜀 + 줄 and marks it North Korean: action plus rope.
How do I build 뜀?
Use a Korean IME: ㄸ ㅟ ㅁ.
On standard 2-set dubeolsik input, type the tense consonant, then the compound vowel, then the final consonant; the IME composes the block automatically. Copy it from the palette above if you only need it once.
If you see loose jamo instead, Korean input is probably off. Unicode also permits an equivalent decomposed jamo sequence, so normalization can expose the parts even when the text is valid.

1Why is 뜀 showing as separate jamo?
It can be either input mode or normalization. A Korean IME composes ㄸ ㅟ ㅁ into one block, while Unicode also permits the equivalent decomposed jamo sequence; check Korean input mode and use NFC when your app offers normalization.
