What 덥 means
덥 is the stem of 덥다, the Korean adjective meaning “hot.” Alone, it is a stem, not a complete polite sentence.
덥 becomes 더워요 because ㅂ changes to 우 before 어요, then 우 and 어 join as 워. Before 은 and 으면 it also changes; before 고 it stays. These patterns also form 더운 (“hot” before a noun) and 더우면 (“if it’s hot”).
Hangul is the writing system for Korean. Created in 1443 to make Korean easier to write, it joins jamo (letters) into syllable blocks like 덥. Its guide, Hunminjeongeum, was published in 1446.
