What 딛 means
It means stepping on something and can also mean overcoming hardship. Literally, a foot presses or rests on a surface. Figuratively, it is chiefly used as 딛고, with hardship as what someone gets past.
Hangul’s creation is recorded in 1443; the 1446 guide Hunminjeongeum explained its design. It offered an easier way to write Korean than older methods that adapted Chinese characters, such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Hangul spread through practical and teaching books before becoming Korea’s official script in 1894. 딛 is a regular syllable in that writing system.

1Why does 딛 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
