Hangul Syllable Dwae

돼
can mean “becomes,” “is allowed,” “works,” or “is enough,” depending on context.
먹어도 돼?
asks permission;
안 돼
means “no” or “not allowed.” It contracts
되어
, a form of Korean
되다
(“become”).

What 돼 means

It is a form of 되다; the sentence sets the reading.

In polite speech, 돼요 contracts 되어요; 되요 is incorrect.

Hangul’s creation was first recorded in 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum is a guide to writing Korean speech. Those dates describe Hangul, not this contraction. A 2010 study argues 돼’s spelling history is more complex than simply shortening 되어.

Standard spelling; grammar sets the reading.

Write 되다, not 돼다.

Why does 돼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
