Hangul syllable dwen

뒌 is a Korean Hangul syllable block, not a word with a fixed meaning by itself; the full Korean word supplies the meaning. It also occurs in contraction and dialect-transcription records, including a Jeju form whose standard-Korean equivalent is 된.

What 뒌 means

A Korean syllable sound, not a word with a fixed meaning.

This block combines a starting consonant, a compound vowel, and an ending consonant; Hangul's letters are called jamo. By itself, 뒌 contributes a syllable sound, while the full Korean word supplies the meaning.

King Sejong created Hangul in 1443 under the name Hunminjeongeum; a book of the same name, published in 1446, explained the system's purpose and design. Earlier Korean writing used Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal, methods that adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. This block, by contrast, is assembled from Hangul's own letters.

When can 뒌 correspond to 된?

In some spoken or dialect records, not as the default spelling.

The National Institute of Korean Language's dictionary gives two pronunciations for 된소리, the Korean term for a tense consonant: one begins with 된 and another with 뒌. The written term remains 된소리.

A 1989 article on Korean contractions lists 뒌 among forms that can result when a verb form joins to a following ending. A 2021 survey records it in a Jeju dialect transcription whose standard-Korean form is 된. These are specific pronunciation or regional records, not a standard replacement for 된.

How do I type 뒌?

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, press E, N, P, then S.

Those keys enter ㄷ, ㅜ, ㅔ, and ㄴ in order; the Korean input method combines the two vowels into ㅞ and builds 뒌.

The Unicode conjoining sequence is 뒌; NFC normalization combines it into the precomposed block 뒌. As of 2026, app support for shaping jamo sequences varies, although Unicode specifies that they should display as one syllable.

Neutral in Korean text; by itself, it names a sound-bearing block rather than a full word.

If you need the standard spelling 된, do not swap in 뒌 on sound alone.

Questions people ask

2

Is 뒌 an emoji?

No. It is a Korean Hangul text character, so its appearance comes from the font rather than an emoji design.

Why does 뒌 show as a box?

A box usually means the font or app cannot display this Hangul glyph. If only 뒌 appears as separate pieces, the app may not shape the jamo sequence; NFC normalization composes it into one block.
