Hangul Syllable Dweom

2173/11172

둼 is a Korean Hangul syllable, not a complete word on its own. It is built from ㄷ ㅝ ㅁ; the surrounding syllables give a Korean word its meaning. On the Dubeolsik 2-set keyboard, E, N, J, A produce it.

What 둼 means

It is a Korean syllable, not a complete word alone.

Its initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant are ᄃ, ᅯ, and ᆷ. The keyboard-compatible forms are ㄷ, ㅝ, and ㅁ. The syllable contributes sound within a Korean word; the surrounding syllables establish the word’s meaning.

Hangul’s creation is recorded in 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the script, explains that it was designed to make Korean easier to read and write. Before Hangul, methods such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal used Chinese characters to record Korean. They belong to Korean writing history, but they are not visual ancestors of 둼.

How do I type 둼 on a Korean keyboard?

On Dubeolsik, type E, N, J, A with Korean input enabled.

Dubeolsik is the standard 2-set keyboard layout: E enters ㄷ, N enters ㅜ, J enters ㅓ, and A enters ㅁ. The Korean input method combines ㅜ ㅓ into ㅝ and composes the syllable. Without Korean input enabled, those keys produce Latin letters.

Why does 둼 appear as separate jamo?

Unicode can store it as one block or three jamo.

Unicode can store 둼 as one precomposed block or as ᄃ ᅯ ᆷ. NFC, or composed normalization, uses the block; NFD, or decomposed normalization, uses the three jamo. Both represent the same syllable, but software comparing raw code-point sequences may treat them differently until it normalizes them.

Orthographic and technical: read it as a Korean syllable within Korean text.

A lone 둼 does not provide a complete word meaning.
