Hangul syllable Dweonj

2162/11172

As of 2026-09-13, 둱 has no established meaning on its own; read it inside a Korean word. The block combines ㄷ, ㅝ, and final ㄵ. If someone sends it alone, ask what they meant: it gives no reliable reaction to decode.

What 둱 means

Its meaning depends on the Korean word around it. “Dweonj” is a technical label for this syllable block, not a pronunciation guide. The block supplies a syllable within a word; the word supplies the meaning.

Hangul was developed under King Sejong as a learnable way to write Korean. The Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the new script, is recorded in the Sejong annals in 1443; an explanatory book about it followed in 1446. Hangul letters represent speech sounds and combine into syllable blocks. 둱 belongs to that system; those dates trace Hangul's history, not the origin of this individual block.

How is 둱 put together?

It combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final cluster. The parts are ㄷ ㅝ ㄵ: ㄷ starts the syllable, ㅝ is its vowel, and ㄵ closes it. Korean calls this final consonant or cluster the batchim. That ending distinguishes 둱 from blocks such as 둬 and 둰.

A Korean input method editor (IME) assembles the block as you type. Enter the parts in order; the physical keys depend on your keyboard layout. Hangul input methods may need an extra step to form the final cluster, so incomplete input can leave separate jamo (individual Hangul letters) or produce a different block.

Why can equivalent forms of 둱 behave differently in software?

The one-block form and the separated letters can be equivalent. The single-block form 둱 and the decomposed sequence 둱 can be canonically equivalent: Unicode normalization can convert between them even though they are stored as different character sequences. Software that compares text without normalization may treat them as different strings.

A font also needs to support the block to draw it correctly. This is a text-processing difference, not a change in what the syllable means.

A neutral written syllable; its role depends on the surrounding Korean word.

Why does 둱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
