What 댮 means
With Hangul input active on the Korean two-set QWERTY layout, type eiqt. The keys enter ㄷ as the opening consonant, ㅑ as the vowel, and ㅂ followed by ㅅ as the closing pair. The input method joins them into one block; as you keep typing, it may shift a consonant into the next block.
What does 댮 mean?
It is a Korean syllable block, not a word translation. 댮 is one written syllable made from Hangul letters. Unicode’s generated label “DYABS” joins short names for its opening consonant, vowel and final consonant pair; it describes the block’s construction. A Korean word containing this syllable gets its meaning from the whole word and its context.
Where do Hangul syllable blocks come from?
They belong to Hangul’s system for combining letters into syllable blocks. King Sejong introduced Hangul in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, the book explaining the new writing system, appeared in 1446.
Before Hangul, Korean writers used Chinese characters and systems called Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal, which adapted those characters to Korean words and grammar. Hangul offered a way to write Korean designed for its own sounds and structure. It spread through religious, practical and literary writing before becoming Korea’s official national writing system in 1894. 댮 is one combination in that system, not a separately invented sign.
