What 뎡 means
It is an older Korean spelling linked to modern 정. Hangul combines consonant and vowel letters into syllable blocks; 뎡 combines ㄷ, ㅕ, and ㅇ. In some older spellings, the first consonant changed before the vowel, and the form developed through 졍 to modern 정.
The 1527 Korean beginner's textbook 훈몽자회 taught Chinese characters with Hangul readings and meanings; it records 뎡 for 丁. Later glosses dated 1576–1752 also preserve 뎡, placing the spelling in a written tradition rather than a one-off use.
A historical record title, 뎡미가례시일긔, is compared with a 졍미 version in philological studies, tracing the spelling change. Preserve 뎡 when transcribing an older source; use 정 for current Korean.
How do I type 뎡?
On Korean 2-set, enter ㄷ ㅕ ㅇ. On QWERTY, those letters are E, U, and D; the Korean input method combines the initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant into one block. On a phone, choose a 2-set Korean keyboard and tap the same sequence.
If the character appears as a blank box, the installed font may lack Hangul coverage. Fonts draw text characters, so the shape can vary from one font to another.
Historical in old writing; in ordinary modern Korean, 뎡 can read as an archaic spelling or a mistake.
In a current word, using 뎡 where 정 belongs can make the spelling look archaic or mistaken.
