What 딏 means
It is one syllable in Korean writing.
Hangul builds syllable blocks from jamo, its basic letters. 딏 combines initial ㄷ, vowel ㅢ, and final ㅊ. Its role in a message depends on the Korean word or sentence around it.
Korean differed from Chinese, and older systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean but were cumbersome. The first known public notice of the new script appears in the court annals, the Veritable Records of Sejong, in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum manuscript explaining its principles followed in 1446. Hangul's uses included religious, educational, practical, literary, and personal writing. It became Korea's official national script in 1894, was suppressed under Japanese rule, and regained a central public role after 1945. These shifts belong to Hangul's broader history; they do not give 딏 a fixed meaning by itself.
How do I type 딏?
Type emlc on a Korean 2-set keyboard.
In Unicode, 딏 can be stored as one precomposed block or as its canonical jamo decomposition, 딏. NFC normalization composes compatible jamo into a syllable; NFD decomposes it. An app with weak support for conjoining jamo may show the parts separately, though they represent the same syllable.
In Korean text, 딏 is a syllable; read it within its word or sentence.
Alone in a chat, it may look like accidental Korean input.

Questions people ask
1Why does 딏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
