Hangul syllable 듑

2258/11172

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type e, b, q; the Korean input method combines the jamo—the letter parts of Hangul syllables—ㄷ, ㅠ, and ㅂ into 듑. The block contributes one syllable to a Korean word, so its meaning comes from the full word around it. Unicode’s generated name describes how the block is built, not a Korean word.

What 듑 means

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type e, b, q. The Korean input method (IME, software that composes Korean as you type) combines the jamo ㄷ, ㅠ, and ㅂ in that order. The final ㅂ sits at the bottom of the block; that position is called batchim (받침).

While an IME is composing a syllable, it can reinterpret a consonant as the current block’s final sound or the next block’s initial sound. Commit the syllable when you want to stop composition.

Software can store the syllable as one precomposed block or as the three-jamo sequence 듑. Unicode normalization, a text-standardization step, can convert between them; a Hangul-aware font can shape the jamo sequence as one syllable.

What does 듑 mean by itself?

It is one syllable; the surrounding Korean word gives it meaning. Unicode’s generated name labels the block’s component sounds; it does not translate it into a Korean word.

A standalone 듑 can work as a spelling-practice or transcription prompt when that task is already clear. Otherwise, ask which word it belongs to.

Hangul’s history explains the block

Hangul’s creation is dated to 1443; its 1446 book 훈민정음 explains why the script was made and how consonants and vowels form syllable blocks. It was designed to write Korean and make reading and writing more accessible to people who had relied on Chinese characters.

Hangul later appeared in court translations of Buddhist and Confucian scriptures, practical books, and government documents. These uses widened the script’s reach; they did not give 듑 a separate history. The block follows Hangul’s regular initial-vowel-final assembly pattern.

Neutral as a Hangul syllable; alone in a message, it reads as an unexplained fragment.

Do not read the Unicode name as a Korean word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 듑 look different in another font?

It can. Fonts draw the same Hangul block with different stroke shapes and spacing. A decomposed jamo sequence can also be shaped into the same syllable.

Why is 듑 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
