What 갡 means
The block has no fixed word meaning by itself. ㄱ begins it, ㅐ is the vowel, and ㄵ fills the final-consonant slot (batchim) as ㄴㅈ. At a word end or before a consonant, ㄵ sounds like ㄴ; before a vowel in the same word, ㅈ starts the next syllable.
Hangul's creation is recorded in 1443; the 1446 guidebook Hunminjeongeum explains its goal: easier Korean writing. It supplemented Chinese characters and older Korean methods using them—Idu, Gugyeol, Hyangchal. Buddhist books used Hangul early, Confucian texts later; it became official in 1894 and lost that status in 1910 under Japanese rule.
