Hangul syllable Gals

13/11172

With Korean 2-set input, type rkft; without it, use your device's Unicode-entry method for UAC0C. 갌 is a Hangul syllable block built from ㄱ, ㅏ, and final ㄽ; by itself, it has no general word meaning. Hangul's design was completed in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 to give Korean speakers a writing system suited to their language.

What 갌 means

On Korean 2-set, type rkft. Switch to Korean input: r enters ㄱ, k enters ㅏ, and f t forms final ㄽ. The input method combines them as 갌; Gals is not a Korean typing spelling.

The keys differ on other Korean layouts, but the Hangul parts stay the same. You can also enter UAC0C through your device's Unicode-entry method.

Does 갌 have a meaning by itself?

No fixed word meaning comes with the block alone. 갌 is a Korean syllable block made from the initial consonant ㄱ, the vowel ㅏ, and the final consonant cluster ㄽ. Unicode's label “Gals” names that letter sequence; it is not a Korean translation.

Hangul was designed for Korean and formally introduced through the Hunminjeongeum, a manuscript explaining how its letters form syllable blocks. Before Hangul, Korean used Chinese characters and systems such as Idu and Hyangchal, which adapted them to Korean words and grammar. Hangul later appeared in commoners' and women's writing, Buddhist texts, novels, and official documents before becoming the main writing system for Korean.

Why does 갌 look different in another font?

Fonts can change how its parts fit inside the block. Text can represent 갌 as one precomposed syllable character or as the same jamo in sequence; software may display either form as a single block.

The shapes and positions of ㄱ, ㅏ, and ㄽ vary by font. When comparing similar blocks, check the final cluster rather than relying on the overall silhouette.

1

Why does 갌 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
