What 갚 means
갚 appears in 갚다, a Korean verb meaning “pay back.”
With 돈 (money) or 빚 (debt), 갚다 means repay; with 은혜 (kindness), return a favor; with 원수 (enemy), take revenge. In 갚다, final ㅍ has the same closed-lip ending sound as Korean ㅂ; before the vowel in 갚아, it starts the next syllable.
Hangul’s first record dates to 1443; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained its purpose and how consonants and vowels form syllable blocks. Earlier systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal used Chinese characters to write Korean.
