What 깪 means
It is one Korean syllable made from three Hangul letters. The conventional Latin transliteration is kkaekk: ㄲ starts with a tense k-like sound, ㅐ is close to the e in “bed,” and final ㄲ closes with a clipped k.
On its own, 깪 gives you a syllable, not a fixed translation. Treat it as a fragment and ask which Korean word or phrase it belongs to.
Why does Hangul use syllable blocks?
Hangul arranges alphabetic letters into visible syllable cells. Created in 1443, it was explained in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to its letters and how they combine. The alphabet made Korean easier to write than adapting Chinese characters, with the aim of bringing reading and writing to more people.
깪 is not a separately invented sign: its three letters, ㄲ ㅐ ㄲ, are composed into a block by a regular rule and can be separated again. Earlier systems such as Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to represent Korean; they belong to Korean writing history but are not direct visual ancestors of this block.
The names differ by region: South Korea calls the script Hangeul, while North Korea uses Choseongul. Korean writing also shifted over time from mixed Hanja use—Chinese characters in Korean text—toward a Hangeul-centered norm.
Neutral as writing; whether it reads naturally depends on the Korean word it appears in.
A lone syllable is not a full translation; read it in its Korean word.
