What 깢 means
It supplies one syllable within a Korean word. The whole word carries its meaning.
Before 1443, Korean was written with Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean) and systems such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal, which adapted those characters to represent Korean. Under King Sejong, Hangul was devised in 1443; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained the new script's principles. During Korea's Joseon dynasty, Hangul was called eonmun (“vernacular writing”) and ranked below Hanja, though it was widely used in private letters. From 1894 to 1928, its use and standing as national writing grew.
