Text symbol

What 깕 means

It combines three Hangul letters into one syllable.

The parts are ᄁ (starting consonant), ᅡ (vowel), and ᆰ (final cluster). In standalone Hangul-letter charts, that cluster appears as ㄺ. These are parts of 깕, not alternate spellings of the whole syllable.

Why was Hangul created?

It was designed to write Korean speech directly.

Hangul was devised in 1443 under the Joseon dynasty, the Korean kingdom of the time. Korean speech differed from Chinese, while writing relied on Chinese characters. In 1446, the book Hunminjeongeum explained the new system’s purpose and principles.
