Hangul syllable 껤

741/11172

껤 is a Korean syllable block whose reading and role come from the surrounding Korean word or phrase. It combines an initial consonant, a vowel and a final consonant cluster. A Korean input method assembles the block from those letters.

What 껤 means

It is a Hangul syllable block. Hangul groups Korean letters, called jamo, into square blocks. 껤 contains an initial consonant, the vowel ㅔ, and the final cluster ㄽ. The forms ㄲ ㅔ ㄽ show those same parts as they appear in keyboard input.

The earliest recorded notice of Hangul is from 1443, and an explanatory book titled Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446. The script was designed to represent Korean speech and show how consonants and vowels combine. Korean writing also used Hanja—Chinese characters used to write Korean. Hangul blocks have a square outline like Chinese characters, but Hangul letters are not their descendants. Hangul moved from a limited early role to widespread use in modern Korean writing; that history belongs to the script, not to 껤 as a separate sign.

How do I type 껤 on a Korean keyboard?

Use a Korean input method and enter the letters in sequence. An input method combines keystrokes into Hangul blocks. On the South Korean two-set Dubeolsik layout, press ShiftR, P, F, then T to enter ㄲ ㅔ ㄽ.

Other layouts use different keys, but the component order stays the same. If you type a vowel next, the input method may move the final consonant into the next block. Press Space to finish 껤 before continuing.

Why can 껤 look different in another font?

Font choices change the drawing, not the character. The placement, shape and size of Hangul letters inside a block can vary between fonts.

Unicode normalization can represent the same syllable as separate joining letters, 껤, which software may combine again for display. Some apps support Hangul-specific font features unevenly, so a spacing change alone does not mean the underlying text is another character.

Neutral and linguistic: 껤 is a unit of Korean writing read in its word or phrase.

As of 2026, no shared standalone message reading is documented for 껤; read it in its Korean context.

1

Why does 껤 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
