Hangul syllable ggem

745/11172

A 1996 comparison records 껨 as the North Korean spelling of “game,” contrasted with South Korean 게임. Sent alone, it identifies the word and spelling convention but not why someone chose it. The block combines an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant.

What 껨 means

It is a North Korean spelling for the borrowed word “game.”

A 1996 comparison by the National Institute of Korean Language contrasts northern 껨 with South Korean standard 게임. The cited North Korean loanword rule dates to 1956 and already uses 껨 for “game.” That rule shows the spelling was in use by 1956; it does not establish when it began.

Hangul was designed for Korean, and 껨 uses its syllable blocks rather than starting a new system. Its first notice dates to 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum, published in 1446, explains blocks built from an initial consonant, a vowel, and an optional final consonant.

What does 껨 mean when someone sends it?

Read it as “game” in the regional spelling convention.

A message containing only 껨 gives you the word and spelling, not the sender’s reason for choosing it. They may be quoting the spelling, discussing language, or naming a game; the surrounding words tell you which.

Why does 껨 look like one square?

It combines three Korean letter components in one block.

Together, ᄁ ᅦ ᆷ form 껨. These jamo, or Korean letter components, are respectively an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant.

Unicode treats the precomposed block and this jamo sequence as canonically equivalent, so normalization can convert between them. Korean input methods build the block as you type; software can also expose the three jamo separately. This changes the representation, not the spelling.

Regional orthography: 껨 marks the North Korean spelling of “game” in the documented contrast.

A standalone 껨 tells you the spelling, not why the sender chose it.

Why is 껨 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
