Hangul Syllable Ggyeogs

760/11172

A Korean input method (IME) assembles 껷 from its consonant and vowel parts when you enter them in sequence. It is one Hangul syllable in Korean text, and the surrounding word supplies its meaning. Hangul’s block layout was designed for writing Korean speech.

What 껷 means

Use a Korean IME to enter the syllable’s parts in order.

Hangul input methods turn typed consonants and vowels into syllable blocks, so 껷 takes an input sequence rather than one dedicated key.

If the IME produces a neighboring block, compare its final consonant cluster. Apps may handle raw jamo (the component letters used to build Hangul syllables), compatibility jamo, and finished blocks differently.

Where did Hangul blocks come from?

They are Hangul’s way of arranging Korean sounds into syllables.

Hangul was created in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음), a guide explaining the new writing system, was published in 1446. It offered a script designed for Korean alongside older writing practices that used Chinese characters.

Earlier Korean systems—idu (이두), gugyeol (구결), and hyangchal (향찰)—used Chinese characters in different ways to record Korean words, sounds, or grammar. The names changed too: Eonmun (언문) was an older name, Gukmun (국문) emerged around 1894, and Hangeul (한글) spread in the early 20th century. A possible connection to Phags-pa, a Mongolian script, remains a scholarly hypothesis rather than an established lineage.

Neutral as a written Korean syllable; its tone comes from the surrounding word and sentence.

Questions people ask

1

Is ggyeogs a Korean word?

No. “Ggyeogs” is Unicode’s generated Latin label for the syllable’s sound sequence; it identifies the block rather than translating it into a Korean word.
