Hangul Syllable Gils

573/11172

긼 is a Hangul block historically tied to 길, the Korean word for “road” or “path.” Its final cluster ㄽ appears in the old compound 긼, corresponding to modern 길가 (“roadside”), and a Korean input method builds it from four keystrokes. Alone in modern chat, it has no standard emotional meaning.

What 긼 means

It is a Hangul block with a historical grammatical role.

Hangul arranges Korean consonants and vowels into syllable blocks so Korean can be written alphabetically, rather than relying only on Chinese characters. It was developed in fifteenth-century Korea. Its first record is dated 1443, and an explanatory book appeared in 1446. A 1447 record shows Middle Korean 긿, an earlier form connected to modern 길 (“road” or “path”).

In the Middle Korean compound 긼, 긼 is the form of earlier 긿 before a following noun with the older genitive ㅅ. A genitive marker links one noun to another, roughly like “of”; the compound corresponds to modern 길가 (“roadside”). A lone modern message gives 긼 no standard emotional meaning.

How do I type 긼?

Use a Korean two-set keyboard and enter four keys in order.

On the standard Korean two-set layout, press r l f t. Those keys enter ㄱ, ㅣ, ㄹ, and ㅅ; the input method combines final ㄹㅅ as ㄽ and forms 긼. If the sequence is interrupted, the next consonant may start a new block.

Typing the Latin letters “gils,” the romanized name, does not compose the Hangul block; a Korean input method needs the component keys.

Why does 긼 show as a box?

The selected font may not include this Hangul glyph.

The character is defined, but each font needs its own drawing of it. If the current font and its fallbacks lack that drawing, software may show a square, a question-mark box, or blank space. A font with Korean Hangul coverage can display it.

Why does 긼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
