What 곱 means

It means a multiple: an amount counted “times” another amount. In Korean quantity phrases, 곱 names the multiplied amount. To compare 곱 and 배, 곱 is the native Korean term related to 곱절; 배 is the Sino-Korean equivalent, a Korean word of Chinese origin. The related words 곱셈 and 곱하다 mean “multiplication” and “to multiply.”

In the 15th century, a record uses 곱ᄀᆡ곰, an older form of Korean known as Middle Korean, for “times.”

Why does 곱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
