What 귀 means
The whole Korean word settles the sense. The Korean Basic Dictionary lists 귀 for “ear,” “corner,” “handle,” and “hearing”; in 귀신 the syllable is part of the word for “ghost,” while 귀- is a prefix meaning “noble,” “rare,” or “expensive.”
Hangul’s creation is dated to 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum book explained that the script could help people without Chinese-character training write Korean more easily. Earlier systems—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—also used Chinese characters to represent Korean. The syllable block 귀 combines initial consonant ㄱ and vowel ㅟ.

Questions people ask
1Why does 귀 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
