hangul syllable gyem

Hangul syllable Gyem

213/11172

곔 is one Hangul syllable block, built from three letter parts called jamo: ㄱ, ㅖ, and ㅁ. In a Korean word, the surrounding syllables give it meaning; sent alone, it reads as an unexplained fragment. A Korean input method joins the parts into one block.

What 곔 means

It is one written Korean syllable, assembled from three letters.

Hangul was devised in 1443 for writing Korean. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the script's purpose and principles, describes a design meant to let Korean speakers write their language without first learning Chinese characters.

Inside Korean spelling, 곔 is one syllable within a word; its surrounding syllables supply the word's meaning. As of 2026-09-13, it has no established standalone reaction reading, so a message containing only 곔 comes across as an unexplained Korean fragment.

how to type 곔

Use Korean input and enter ㄱ, ㅖ, then ㅁ.

On the common two-set Korean keyboard, called Dubeolsik, press R, ShiftP, then A on a QWERTY keyboard. The IME assembles the consonant, vowel, and final consonant into a square block as you type; other layouts may assign different keys.

If the letters stay separate, the keyboard is in another input mode; switch to Korean.

why does 곔 split into jamo

Unicode can store the same syllable as three letter parts.

A precomposed Hangul syllable stores its letter parts in one character; decomposed text stores them separately. Unicode normalization can split 곔 into those parts or join them again, changing the representation but not the Korean reading.

The pieces are not unrelated symbols. The closest spelling trap is 겸: it shares ㄱ and final ㅁ, but its middle letter is ㅕ; 곔 has ㅖ.

Neutral within Korean spelling; on its own, it gives little context.

Give it Korean word context; alone, it reads like an unexplained fragment.

Why does 곔 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
