What 곁 means
Beside or close by; with a person, a trusted companion.
Korean endings shift its sense: 곁에 (“beside”), 곁에서 (“at someone’s side”), 곁이 되다 (“become a source of support”).
The earliest recorded example of 곁 is in Yongbieocheonga, a Korean verse text, in 1447. A text from Korea’s Joseon dynasty preserves 겨, an older form used to mark a place. Hangul was developed in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 for daily writing. A 2023 comparison treats Korean 옆 and Japanese そば (“near”) and よこ (“side”) as words with overlapping uses, not shared ancestry.
Warm and supportive with people; a bare 곁 leaves the relationship open.
