Text symbol

What 굡 means

It writes one Korean syllable; the whole word gives its meaning.

Hangul was announced in 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the script, followed in 1446. It offered a more direct way to write Korean than older methods using Chinese characters: Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Chinese characters stayed important in official writing until Hangul became a national script in 1894. The Phags-pa script is a debated possible influence.

굡 may look different across fonts because its components can change shape or placement; the underlying character stays the same.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 굡 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
