What 균 means

Alone, it can mean bacteria; compounds differ.

In Korean, 均 appears in 균형 (“balance”) and 평균 (“average”); 菌 appears in 세균 (“bacteria”). These Chinese-derived characters are different word roots.

Why is 균 written as a block?

Hangul arranges letters into one syllable block.

King Sejong created Hangul in 1443; its guide appeared in 1446. Before Hangul, people wrote Korean using Chinese characters in systems such as idu, hyangchal and gugyeol. Hangul was meant to make Korean writing easier to learn.
