hangul syllable hag

Hangul syllable Hak

학 is a Korean syllable romanized “hak,” with no fixed meaning alone. In school and study words it carries 學’s learning sense; in 학이 날다, it means crane (鶴).

Text symbol

What 학 means

Context decides. 학교 (school), 학생 (student), and 학습 (study) use 학 with 學’s learning sense. In 학이 날다 (“a crane flies”), 학 means crane; its Hanja, a Chinese character used in Korean, is 鶴.

Hangul was designed to make writing accessible without prior Chinese-character study. Its first recorded mention is dated 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the script, appeared in 1446. Hangul letters form syllable blocks such as 학. Those dates mark Hangul’s history, not 학’s first appearance.

Questions people ask

1

Why does Unicode use HAG when Korean romanization is hak?

They follow different naming systems. Official Korean romanization writes final ㄱ as k, giving hak; Unicode builds HAG from the names of Hangul’s individual letters.
