What 흔 means
Enter ㅎ, then ㅡ, then ㄴ in a Korean IME.
On a Dubeolsik two-set layout, those jamo are typed with g, m, and s. Enter them in that order; the IME composes the consonant, vowel, and final consonant into one syllable block called heun. With the Korean IME off, you will get Latin letters instead.
Unicode also allows the block to be decomposed into its jamo and recomposed again. If software shows component letters separately during editing, check the input or normalization state before treating it as a different syllable.
what does 흔 mean
By itself, 흔 is a syllable, not a complete Korean message.
Do not give the isolated block one English gloss. Korean word entries connect it to a root used for “common” or “frequent,” while the official learner’s dictionary records a verb beginning with it for “shake” or “sway.” The neighboring syllables decide the word, so a lone 흔 needs context.
The earliest evidence this research can date is for the writing system, not this individual block: Hangul was developed in 1443 and publicly promulgated in 1446. Its purpose was practical — giving Korean speakers an easier way to write their language than the Chinese characters used in formal literacy. As of 2026-09-07, the sources checked do not establish a first surviving attestation for 흔 or a separate symbolic meaning.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 흔 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
