What 횡 means
The whole Korean word sets its meaning.
In words built from the Chinese character 橫, meanings include “horizontal” or “across,” extending to “side,” “unexpected,” or “arbitrary.” Hangul was devised so Korean speech could be written without relying on Chinese characters. Its first record dates to 1443; an explanatory book followed in 1446.
