What 훋 means
It marks one syllable in a Korean word; the surrounding word gives it meaning.
훋 joins three Korean letters: ㅎ at the start, ㅜ as its vowel, and ㄷ as the final consonant. In a Korean word, the surrounding spelling determines how the syllable is read.
Hangul’s design explains the block
Hangul was designed to represent Korean speech more directly than Chinese-character writing. Its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, describes consonant and vowel letters and how they combine into syllable blocks like 훋. Hangul is first recorded in 1443; the book appeared in 1446.
A possible design reference was Phags-pa, a square script created for languages under Mongol rule. It was commissioned in 1265 and promulgated in 1269; Korean scholarship treats it as a possible influence on Hunminjeongeum, not as an ancestor of this individual syllable.
How do you type 훋?
Enter the initial, vowel, then final.
With a Korean IME (input method), enter ㅎ, then ㅜ, then ㄷ. On the standard Korean two-set (Dubeolsik) keyboard, those keys are g, n, e; the IME joins the letters into 훋.

Questions people ask
2Why do I see ㅎㅜㄷ instead of 훋?
Those are compatibility jamo, separate code-point forms of Korean letters, not the canonical Unicode decomposition of 훋. That decomposition uses joining jamo. A Korean IME combines the initial, vowel, and final keystrokes, but an app can leave the compatibility jamo separate.
Is 훋 a Korean word?
No. The National Institute of Korean Language’s Basic Korean Dictionary had no entry for 훋 as of 2026-09-14. On its own, treat it as a written syllable; a full Korean word or name could still contain it.
