What 훞 means
It writes one Korean syllable.
Its components are Hangul jamo—the individual letters that form Korean syllables: ㅎ starts the block, ㅜ is its vowel, and ㅍ closes it. On a standard two-set Korean keyboard, g–n–v enters those letters in order. A Korean word or phrase supplies the word-level meaning.
How did Hangul take shape?
It was designed to represent Korean speech.
Hangul was devised under King Sejong in Korea. Its earliest recorded presentation dates to 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum followed in 1446.
The script was intended to represent Korean speech, widen access to writing, and help readers pronounce Chinese characters. Consonant shapes reflect the speech organs used to make them, while vowel shapes follow a set of principles. A possible influence from the Mongolian ʼPhags-pa script remains debated; it is a hypothesis, not an established parent-child relationship.
