What 홙 means
It has no independent word meaning.
홙 is 화 with final ㄵ; ㅘ combines ㅗ and ㅏ. “Hwanj” is its romanized label. Unicode normalization can also represent the same syllable as separate Hangul letters (jamo).
Hangul made Korean writing easier than Chinese characters or Idu (Korean written with Chinese characters). A 1443 notice in Sejong Sillok, a royal chronicle, records its creation; a 1446 book explains its design. It later served translations, notices, books, recipes and learning texts. Hangul became official in Korea in 1894; the name Hangeul spread in the early 20th century.

Questions people ask
1Why does 홙 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
