hangul syllable hwels

Hangul syllable Hwels

11017/11172

A Korean input method can form 휈 from ㅎ ㅞ ㄽ; Unicode also represents it as the jamo sequence ᄒ ᅰ ᆳ. On its own, 휈 has no fixed word meaning. “Hwels” is Unicode’s component-based label, not a Korean word.

What 휈 means

Use a Korean input method: enter ㅎ, then ㅞ, then ㄽ. In Unicode, these Hangul components are called jamo; the sequence ᄒ ᅰ ᆳ composes into 휈.

The input method groups the initial consonant, vowel, and final cluster into one block. Depending on the Korean keyboard layout, you may enter ㄽ as ㄹ followed by ㅅ.

What does 휈 mean?

휈 is a Hangul block, not a word with a set meaning. It combines the initial consonant ㅎ, medial vowel ㅞ, and final cluster ㄽ. “Hwels” is Unicode’s label for that component pattern, not a Korean word attached to the block. Changing a component makes a different syllable block, not a font variant.

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was developed under King Sejong; its first recorded announcement is dated to 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the new script, explained how consonants and vowels fill the beginning, middle, and end of a syllable. The script aimed to make writing accessible to ordinary people and to record Korean speech, including readings of Chinese characters.

Older references also called the script eonmun, meaning writing for everyday language; “Hangeul” became widely used as its name after 1928.

Why does 휈 look different in fonts?

A font can change the drawing without changing the character. Unicode encodes 휈 as a precomposed Hangul syllable; a font arranges the initial consonant, vowel, and final cluster inside a square cell. Their shapes, proportions, and placement vary by font.

Text processing can also store the same syllable as separate conjoining jamo. Unicode normalization can recombine those equivalent components into the precomposed block.

Why is 휈 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
