What 현 means
The whole word or the name's chosen Hanja gives its meaning. In Korean vocabulary, 현 contributes one syllable, so translate the complete word. In a personal name, Hangul records the sound; chosen Hanja—Chinese characters also used in Korean—can supply a particular meaning. The syllable alone does not identify which Hanja, if any, the family chose.
Hangul was designed to represent Korean sounds and make writing more accessible than the older Chinese-character system. Its introducing text, Hunminjeongeum, was first recorded in 1443 and published in 1446. Those dates belong to the writing system, not a separate origin date for 현. Hangul blocks combine letters; the older Hanja tradition remains relevant to some personal-name meanings.
How do you type 현?
On a Korean two-set keyboard, enter ㅎ, ㅕ, then ㄴ. On QWERTY, the same sequence is g, u, s, without Shift; the input method combines the letters into one syllable as you type.
Neutral in Korean writing; alone, it reads as a syllable or a fragment of a name.
Do not assign one Hanja meaning to every 현.
