hangul syllable hyil

Hangul syllable Hyil

11125/11172

On a standard Korean 2-set keyboard, G-M-L-F forms 흴. In Korean, it can describe something that will be white or appear as a dictionary gloss for 素 (“white; plain”). The syllable alone does not show which use is intended.

What 흴 means

Type gmlf on the Korean 2-set layout.

G produces ㅎ, M then L form the compound vowel ㅢ, and F adds final ㄹ. The Korean input method joins those jamo (Hangul letters that combine into syllable blocks); if they stay separate, composition is not active.

Unicode treats the single Hangul block 흴 and the separate jamo sequence ㅎㅢㄹ as equivalent spellings. Text normalization can switch between them without changing the text; fonts may place the components differently.

What does 흴 mean?

Its meaning depends on the Korean words around it.

흴 is context-bound. In 흴 것이다, it is the future form of 희다 (“to be white”): the phrase predicts something will be white. A Korean dictionary also gives 흴 소 as a gloss for 素, a Hanja character (a Chinese character used in Korean) meaning “white; plain.”

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 as a practical way to write Korean. The Korean teaching text 소학언해 was printed in 1587; a distribution record is dated 1588. A historical example in 1588 links 흴 with 흘, showing a spelling change rather than a font variant.

What should I do with a bare 흴?

Ask for the Korean word or sentence around it.

Its position can show whether it belongs to a verb phrase, a Hanja gloss, or another context. If someone sends only this syllable, ask for the full word or sentence before settling on a translation.

Neutral in Korean writing; by itself, it reads as a fragment rather than a complete message.

Do not translate standalone 흴 as “white” without Korean context.

Why are ㅎㅢㄹ and 흴 treated as the same text?

They are equivalent Hangul representations. Text normalization can switch between the separate jamo sequence and the single syllable block without changing the text.

Why is 흴 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
