hangul syllable hyuh

Hangul syllable hyuh

11088/11172

흏 is one syllable written in Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and its role as a word depends on Korean context. It combines the consonant ㅎ, the vowel ㅠ and a final ㅎ. On a standard two-set Korean keyboard, g-b-g builds the block.

What 흏 means

It is a Korean syllable block whose word meaning needs context. Hangul is the Korean alphabet: ㅎ begins this block, ㅠ is its vowel, and the final ㅎ closes it. Together, the letters show a syllable's structure; surrounding Korean text determines what word it belongs to.

As of 2026-09-14, the National Institute of Korean Language's Basic Korean Dictionary had no standalone word entry for 흏. In a message, read it through the surrounding Korean word or sentence.

Hangul was created in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, the work explaining the alphabet, was published in 1446. The script let people write Korean without first learning Chinese characters, the established system used by educated elites. Hangul later appeared in personal letters, Buddhist texts, novels and official documents; these are milestones in the alphabet's history, not an origin story for this exact syllable.

How do I type 흏?

Use Korean input on the standard two-set keyboard. On Dubeolsik, enter g-b-g: the input method editor (IME), software that combines Korean letters as you type, maps those keys to ㅎ, ㅠ and final ㅎ and forms 흏. If you see Latin gbg, switch from Latin to Korean input.

While Korean text is being composed, a vowel you enter next can move the pending final consonant to the start of the next block. To keep 흏 as a complete syllable, commit it with a space or punctuation.

Why does 흏 look different in another font?

Fonts vary the block's layout, and editors may show the letters separately. Hangul can be stored as one precomposed block or as an equivalent ordered sequence of jamo, its component letters. An editor that exposes the sequence may show ㅎ ㅠ ㅎ instead of 흏.

Fonts also vary the size and position of Hangul letters within a block. Older Korean texts used additional jamo that are not part of modern spelling, so historical syllables may appear as sequences of component letters rather than a modern precomposed block.

Korean-specific and technical; a bare 흏 reads as a syllable sample rather than a complete message.

Do not infer a word meaning from the block alone; read it in Korean context.
