What 흊 means
흊 is one Korean syllable block, not a complete word.
Hangul's small consonant and vowel letters are called jamo. In 흊, ㅎ is the opening consonant, ㅠ the vowel, and ㅈ the ending consonant. Together they form a syllable; the meaning of 흊 depends on the Korean word around it.
An official record of King Sejong's reign first mentions the new script in 1443, calling it Hunminjeongeum. A book with that title, published in 1446, explained its purpose and how its letters combine. At the time, Hanja—Chinese characters used in Korean writing—dominated formal writing. Hangul later became the main writing system for Korean.
What does 흊 mean when someone sends it?
A lone 흊 does not identify a Korean word or message.
Ask what surrounding word or phrase was intended before deciding what the sender meant.
How do I type 흊?
Type its three Korean letters in order; the keyboard joins them.
Select Korean input in your keyboard settings. On the standard 2-set layout, type ㅎ, ㅠ, then ㅈ; the input method combines them into 흊. On a QWERTY-labelled 2-set keyboard, those keys are G-B-W.
Unicode also encodes the same syllable as 흊, three conjoining jamo, instead of one precomposed block. Text normalization—a standard way software treats equivalent encodings—recognizes both forms as equivalent.
Neutral in Korean writing; alone, it gives too little context to read a message.
A lone syllable cannot reveal the word or tone the sender intended.

Questions people ask
1Why does 흊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
